FAQs about the Volunteer Patrol

How do I join?
There are a number of steps to becoming a patroller. The first step is to complete the candidate interest form and arrange an interview with the Candidate Advisor. Once you have met the minimum requirements, then you may be accepted into our Patroller Candidate program.

What are the requirements for acceptance into the Patroller Candidate Program?
There are four basic requirements: 1) Successfully pass a skiing or boarding test; 2) Possess a current CPR certification; 3) Possess a current Outdoor Emergency Care certification or an EMT-B or higher certification; 4) Register with the National Ski Patrol.

How good of a skier or snowboarder do I have to be?
We are looking for skiers & snowboarders who are stable and confident anywhere on our mountain. We have a wide variety of terrain, and our conditions change dramatically throughout the year. We don't expect pretty, but we do expect competent.

What is the ski and boarding test?
Generally you will be asked to demonstrate basic skiing or boarding skills to include a variety of carved radius turns, wedge turns and stops; traversing techniques; sideslipping and gliding maneuvers; flat terrain and ascending movements.

I'm a snowboarder? Can I still join the patrol?
Yes, we are looking for skiers, snowboarders, and teleskiers. Mt. Shasta Patrol is one of the largest "Boarder" Patrols in the United States.

I'm a teleskier? Can I still join the Patrol?
Yes, we are looking for skiers, snowboarders, and teleskiers.

What if I can't pass the ski test? Can I still get involved?
Yes. You may join our Auxiliary Program.

What is your Auxiliary Program?
As an Auxiliary, your primary duty is to assist the patrol in the First Aid room. You will need a current medical certificate (OEC, EMT-B or higher). This program is designed for those who wish to get "involved in the patrol" and provides a great opportunity to practice and stay on top of your medical skills. Benefits, including ski comps and meal tickets, are available to qualifying Auxiliaries.

How do I get the medical training?
The National Ski Patrol has developed a course called "Outdoor Emergency Care" which is required of all patrollers. This is an ~80 hr class which is given in the summer or fall. The class covers the basics of trauma in an outdoor environment, with special emphasis on orthopedic and cold-related injuries (frostbite, hypothermia). The class is comparable in scope to an EMT-B class, but with more emphasis on trauma and less on medical emergencies. For current courses offered, you may go on-line to www.farwest.org and check under Calendars and Far West Courses. Another option is to take an EMT-B course. These courses are often offered at your local colleges.

I'm already an EMT-B or higher. Do I need to take the OEC course?
Yes. However, if you feel your skills are adequate for the material taught in the course, you may "Challenge" the OEC course. This involves completing a written workbook and passing both a written & practical test.

What is involved in the Candidate Program?
Upon acceptance into our Candidate Program, there are a series of disciplines that you will be trained and evaluated on. These include 1) Skiing/Boarding Proficiency; 2) Toboggan-Handling Proficiency; 3) Incident Site Management; 4) Hill Safety; 5) Outdoor Emergency Care certification; 6) Basic Patrol Test. Upon successful completion of the Program you will qualify as a basic patroller.

How much time is required in the Candidate Program?
There are no time requirements in the Program. Candidates complete the Program when they have successfully been evaluated in all the required disciplines. There are weekly training sessions available to attend. Other training sessions can be available upon appointment. Generally, the program can be completed in as little as one month or as much as two years. It all depends on your abilities and how often you can attend training.

Are there any costs involved in the Candidate Program?
There are no costs for the training. During your training days, you will be issued a lift ticket. In addition, you will need to carry your own basic medical supplies. There are initial costs of course (those involved in acquiring your medical certifications and your annual National Ski Patrol dues). Our NSP dues are approximately $57. Upon becoming a basic patroller, you will be required to purchase the appropriate uniform: example…. jackets $200-$350 and/or vests $90-$120.

As a Patroller, how often must I patrol?
To maintain an "active" status, you must patrol a minimum of ten days per season.

Do Patrollers receive any benefits?
Yes. Mt. Shasta Volunteer Patrollers receive excellent benefits. In general, patrollers have an option of pre-signing and committing themselves for a number of specific calendar days prior to the winter ski season. The more days committed….the more benefits they receive. These benefits include daily comp passes, meal tickets, employee and family season passes.

I'm a current Patroller at another ski area. Can I transfer to Mt. Shasta?
Yes. We welcome both past and current patrollers from other areas. Please fill out the patroller interest form and we will be glad to talk to you about the requirements for transferring to Mt. Shasta.

Who do I talk to if I have questions?
If you have any questions about training and the Patrol, please fill out a Candidate Interest Form and our Candidate Advisor will be in touch with you.
